Position

We are seeking a Senior Principal Linux Systems Administrator to oversee and optimize enterprise-level Linux infrastructure. This role involves managing both physical and virtual Linux environments, troubleshooting complex system issues, ensuring high availability, and maintaining secure, scalable computing resources.

What You'll Do

Linux Systems Administration

  • Maintain smooth operation of multi-user Linux systems, ensuring high availability and optimal performance.
  • Interact with users and evaluate vendor products, recommending hardware/software purchases.
  • Oversee system installation, backup recovery, policy enforcement, and documentation.
  • Troubleshoot RHEL operating system issues and provide immediate solutions to restore service.

Physical Server Support (Linux)

  • Perform physical server builds and troubleshooting, including:
    • DAS/SAN storage connectivity.
    • Memory, power supply, HBA, and component replacements.
    • Coordination with application/database teams for issue resolution.
    • Storage provisioning: extending/adding SAN drives, configuring RAID groups for DAE storage.
    • Configure server backups and restores (TSM, Avamar)
  • Connect Linux servers to network/SAN, ensuring proper setup and performance.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues related to database connectivity, nonresponsive applications, backup agent failures, and CIFS/NFS permissions.

Virtual Server Administration (Linux)

  • Deploy and manage virtual servers (TSM, Avamar, Nutanix applications).
  • Perform CPU/RAM adjustments, hypervisor troubleshooting, and cluster resource planning.
  • Troubleshoot VM performance issues, host failures, and fiber channel storage path failures.
  • Administer snapshots, image backups, disaster recovery, and Linux-based VMware ESXi/AHV/Azure/AWS environments.
  • Manage proactive health checks, including datastore capacity thresholds, CPU/memory utilization, and host availability.

Incident & Request Management

  • Use ServiceNow for incident resolution, request fulfillment, and system documentation.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve server, application, and storage issues in both on-premises and cloud-based Linux environments.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to resolve critical IT infrastructure challenges.

What You'll Bring

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of Linux server administration experience (preferably Red Hat Enterprise Linux).
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and work after hours/weekends as needed.
  • Capable of travel to NGC facilities as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Red Hat System Administration certification(s).
  • Experience with NAS storage administration (preferably NetApp ONTAP 8.x or higher, CDOT).
  • Strong understanding of RAID configurations and enterprise storage concepts.
  • Experience with Red Hat Satellite Server (v5 & v6) configuration and usage.
  • Security hardening experience, including RMF compliance and STIG implementations.
  • Hands-on expertise with VMware ESXi (6.x or higher).
  • Strong documentation skills (Wiki, SharePoint).
